Cascade Fill

PreparationData Table→ Data Table

Fill up or down to propagate a column's last-seen value into the empty cells around it.

Description

Fills blank cells in selected columns by carrying the nearest real value forward or backward — Fill Down copies the previous non-blank value into every blank cell after it, Fill Up does the same moving upward. Blank cells (""), "?", and any custom values you list are all treated as gaps to fill. Common right after PDF extraction, where a value that visually spans several rows is only ever captured once.

Idéal pour

  • Filling in a merged-cell value from a PDF or Excel export that only appears once per group
  • Propagating a category or section label down through the rows it applies to
  • Treating placeholder text like "N/A" or "—" as blank and filling over it with custom null values

Comment utiliser

1Connect your table
Pass any table into Cascade Fill's input.
2Select the columns to fill
Choose one or more columns whose blank cells should be filled.
3Choose a direction
Fill Down propagates the previous value forward; Fill Up propagates the next value backward.
4Add custom null values (optional)
List any additional placeholder text (beyond blank and "?") that should also be treated as a gap to fill.

Conseils et remarques

Pairs well with PDF Converter
A value that visually spans several rows in a source PDF is usually only captured on its first row — Cascade Fill (Down) is the standard fix.
Only fills what's marked as blank
A cell containing stray whitespace or an unlisted placeholder isn't touched unless it's genuinely empty, "?", or one of your custom null values — run Cleaner first if formatting is inconsistent.
